All anesthetics are provided by Shar Alikhani, M.D., Former Chief of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) at Mission. Dr. Alikhani is a Harvard trained, Board Certified Physician Anesthesiologist who is fellowship trained in Pediatric Anesthesia, and he has performed more than 10,000 anesthetics. He has devoted more than 10 years to the care of adults and children at a Trauma Center. He combines his knowledge and background in General and Pediatric Anesthesia to provide the safest sedation possible in the dental office. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from parents:
Why Does My Child Need Anesthesia?
The fear of pain, the sound of drilling, and separation from parents make many children anxious when they go to a Dentist’s office. Dentists often use nitrous oxide or moderately sedating drinks to ease children’s worries, and to make them cooperate. Despite this, some children still will not tolerate any dental procedures. We provide a state-of-the-art surgery center setting complete with hospital quality anesthesia and monitoring to ensure the comfort and safety of your child.
What is Unique About Our Practice?
Dr. Alikhani provides a hospital quality anesthetic in a unique surgery center setting. State of the art monitoring and anesthesia equipment is used to transform the dentist’s office into a hospital quality surgery center setting. Dr. Alikhani will provide anesthesia in a precise, safe manner, ensuring your child is asleep, comfortable, and safe during the whole procedure. He can minimize the time your child is asleep as well as the time it takes to fully awaken.
Who Will Administer My Child’s Anesthesia?
Dr. Shar Alikhani, Harvard trained physician anesthesiologist and fellowship trained in Pediatric Anesthesia, will perform all aspects of the anesthetic. Your child will remain under his direct, constant supervision until discharged home. Deep sedation in healthy patients is very safe when performed by an experienced and board certified physician anesthesiologist. Dr. Alikhani specializes in the care of babies and small children and extends this safety and expertise to the very youngest patients. Usually, if sedation is offered, it is provided by a dentist. You rarely find a medical doctor sedating dental patients with such precision as Dr. Alikhani. The skills and medical judgment he has refined over years of hospital work caring for critically ill children and adults during complex operations should give you confidence that your child will be safe in his hands.
What is a Surgery Center Setting?
There was a time when anesthesia was only administered in hospitals, however, our exclusive, state of the art, ultra-compact anesthesia equipment and monitoring transform the dentist’s office into a virtual surgery center setting, with safeguards available only at hospitals and surgery centers.
What to Expect
Dr. Alikhani will contact you one or two days before the scheduled dental procedure to find out about any health problems your child may have, review the eating and drinking instructions, and discuss the details of his or her personalized anesthesia plan.
At the time of the dental appointment, the parent usually carries the child to the procedure area. The child sits in the parent’s lap and goes to sleep by taking a few breaths of a bubble gum flavored mask while Dr. Alikhani tells a simple story or sings them a song. After the child is asleep, additional monitoring equipment is added and a child-sized I.V. line is started. The anesthesia is deepened to the regulated level.
Dr. Alikhani will continuously monitor your child throughout the procedure and stay until they are awake and ready to be discharged home.
